The search for an NDA spirit event that is both appropriate and fun has ended.

Student Government, with help from the Canton service trip group, has scheduled an open skate to take place after the January 29 hockey game.

According to Mrs. Laura Smith, organizer of the event, the open skate idea came about when Student Government was looking for a fun alternative to a dance as well as a way to promote school spirit.

The skate party, which will be completely free to students, will take place after the hockey game at the Cornerstone Ice Rink in Ashwaubenon. The event will most likely take place on Rink 2 from approximately 10 p.m. to midnight.

Students are encouraged to attend both the open skate as well as the game that precedes it.

“It is important in high school to show spirit, whether you’re a player or a spectator,” Mrs. Smith said. “High school is a key point in life and you need to live it up while also encouraging the hockey team to play their hearts out.”

The cost of the event will be funded by Student Government, and students will not need to pay any rental fees.  Members of the Executive Board of Student Government thought skating would be a fun idea to try out, particularly because it has never been done before.

The only expense for students will be purchasing treats provided by students going on the Canton service trip with the proceeds going to a good cause.

“All of the money we make will go towards buying restoration materials for the houses we will fix in Canton,” Sr. Laura Zelten, campus minister, said. “Plus, all of the food will be homemade by the students going on the trip.”

According to Sr. Laura, the food will mostly be snacks and finger foods, and with the help of students, they hope to raise $100 for the trip. Even if food is not purchased, students are encouraged to give a small donation to the cause.

“All of the rest of the event is free, so hopefully kids will have some food money to spend. Don’t eat supper and come to the open skate,” Sr. Laura  said.

Student Government will be advertising the event all week to encourage students to come.  Prizes and games will add to the fun of the skate.

“Students should come out and do something different on a Friday night. And remember, no grinding!”Mrs. Smith jokingly said.
