The US Health Care Bill originally proposed by President Barack Obama has been put on hold after a surprising Senate change. Originally the bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 220-215. The vote was passed to the Senate and passed with a vote of 60-40; just enough of a majority to pass the major bill. It was a tremendous victory for the Democratic Party and Obama. Little did they know, the seat for the Massachusetts Senate was about to be up for grabs between the parties.
In August of last year, Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy passed away after holding the seat for the last 46 years. This gave both parties the chance to elect a senator. Massachusetts has been a Democratic state for a very long time. It seemed as if challenger Martha Coakley would take the seat as she was Democratic, but Scott Brown was determined to take the seat. In the end, Brown became the senator for the state of Massachusetts giving the Republicans just enough seats to block the Health Care Bill from passing through. The republicans now have the power to halt all major bills as the Democratic Party doesn’t have enough of a majority to get them through. It is hard to tell what will happen in the future with the Health Care bill but for now, to Obama and the Democratic Party’s disappointment, it is not going anywhere.
