The Batman Movies are some the most coveted in the industry. It left us instant classics like Batman and Batman Begins. Too bad we have terrible stuff like Batman and Robin.

Superhero movies are a dime a dozen these days, and even though we got Ironman and The Incredible Hulk, 2 pretty good hero movies both released in ‘08, there’s just too much bad mixed with the occasional good.

            But wait! Something…Different?

The Dark Knight is everything anyone could love about batman, superheroes, DC, or just about anything else, rolled into one ridiculously jam-packed movie. If you are comic fan you will love this movie. If you are an action fan you will love this movie. If you are a movie fan at all you will love this movie. If you are NOT a movie fan at all you will love this movie. It’s awesome.

There was all the controversy over Heath Ledgers’ death and all, but they picked the perfect cast. Christian Bale IS Batman and Heath Ledgers IS the Joker. The humor in the movie as well as the, uh, not-so-humorous parts, are pulled off flawlessly. Christopher Nolan is a great director and the writing and music cues work great with the timing of the scenes.

The line between good and evil is questioned multiple times throughout the 2+ hour long epic, so you can’t really tell who the hero and villain are, because they’re both the bad guys in some way. The Heath Ledgers portrayal is sadistic, but surprisingly lovable because of his genuinely hilarious lines. I really wish this was a video review, because I desperately need to show the humor to you. But I won’t spoil it.

Why this wonderful movie wasn’t nominated for ANY academy awards is an absolute mystery. I assume the nominators aren’t really used to Batman having superior writing to Milk. Sure, Heath Ledgers won best supporting actor, but this is easily the best movie of 2008. Media is shrouded in opinion so nothing is truly right or wrong. If you think The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year, you’re not wrong. If you thought Benjamin Button was the best movie of the year, you’re not wrong. If you thought The Spirit was the best movie of the year, you’re dumb, but you’re not wrong. Mrs. McDermott said she didn’t even like the movie, so your opinion may vary.

This movie is incredible. The humor, ingenuity, variety, quality, and quantity are impeccable. The only real uncertainty is how much you’ll allow it to take over your life.
