   The Thanksgiving season is here!

A day when people get together and offer thanks, which is a fun day of enjoying the company of family and friends.

It’s a special day to gather with loved ones and share what they are most thankful for, for that year.

What are students at Alta Vista thankful for this year?

“First of all, I give thanks for all the food! I’m thankful for my family and my parents who gave me life”, Senior Francisco Valdez said.

Younger people may mostly be thankful for material items they have, and cannot see themselves without it because it connects them to more important aspects of life, like friendship.   “I’m thankful for… my cell phone!” Sophomore Jessica Barrientos said. “Without it, I would not be able to keep in touch with my friends.”

This was also what Freshman Magdalena Garcia was thankful for. But she said she was also appreciative because she couldn’t see herself in life without texting.

Senior Andrea Brockman reflects back on this year and is grateful for a lot.

“I’m thankful for my family, friends, and my house.” Brockman said. “I’m thankful for this last year of high school. I’ve grown a lot this year and shared happy, sad and amazing moments with family and friends. I’m thankful for one more year of being alive!”

Students will not just celebrate with family in Tucson this season.

“This year I’m planning to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family and friends in Cananea, Sonora,” Junior Alex De La Garza said.

Traditional meals including turkey, mashed potatoes, bread, and salad are often served, but other traditions will be enjoyed just as much.

“We don’t have a traditional meal; we just get whatever is on special [laughs]! What we do have as a tradition is la rosca [large rounded bread],” Senior Eduardo Olivares said. ”We get together and eat la rosca, and whoever gets the monito [a little doll inside the bread], they have to bring food for everyone to eat.”

Olivares said he is thankful for his mom because she always did whatever it took to make everyone in his family happy.

For these Lobos, this Thursday, November 27 will be a special day of celebration, food, fun, gatherings, and smiles.
