10) “Halloween”

“Halloween” is about a killer named Michael Myers who after years of being at a psychiatric hospital escapes and returns to his hometown. There he begins a killing spree on teenagers on Halloween night, while his doctor tries to track him down and prevent his path of destruction. My Take: Although it is a short movie, I was frightened by this movie. The music makes a big difference and I think it has one of the best scores out of any film. It is the perfect film to watch on Halloween. The scene in the end where Jamie Lee Curtis comes face to face with the killer is my favorite part.

9) “28 Days Later”

“28 Days Later” is about an outbreak of a virus that causes zombie-like rage in its victims. Set in a deserted London, a group of survivors try to survive a present day post apocalypse and the collapse of society. My Take: A stylistic, smart, and haunting movie that left me shocked at the end. Some of the scenes to look for include the deserted London shot and a nerve wracking tire scene.

8) “The Amityville Horror”

“The Amityville Horror” is about a family that moves into a house where a man had killed his family and himself. Strange occurrences begin to happen as the past comes back to haunt the new family. My Take: The creepy music carries this movie like “Halloween” does and I think it is one of the best haunted house movies. When the babysitter gets locked in the closet and the priest gets attacked by flies are some of my favorite parts of the movie.

7) “It”

Based on a Stephen King novel “It” follows seven childhood friends who reunite in order to defeat a clown who has the ability to transform into their darkest fears. Set in two parts, one centering on their childhood battle with It and the other on their attempt to finally destroy It. My Take: If you are afraid of clowns this is not a movie for you. Then again since It takes on common fears everyone should be frightened by something in this movie. The fortune cookie scene in Part 2 made me want to throw up it was so shocking.

6) “The Exorcist”

The classic film “The Exorcist” made the sixth position on my list. It follows a young girl who shows symptoms of possession. An attempt to exorcise the demon is brought to action by two priests while her mother fights for the return of her daughter. My Take: The most successful horror movie in terms of Oscars is a very creepy film. The performances by the actors are excellent, most notably Linda Blair as the possessed young girl. She has a haunting mood and does many acts that are unexpected. After you watch this movie you will never look at pea soup the same.

5) “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”

The Charlie Brown gang celebrates Halloween, while Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin to grow out of the pumpkin patch. My Take: Even though it is only 25 minutes, this is a movie that should be watched yearly. It has many funny moments including Snoopy as a WWI fighter pilot and Charlie Brown receiving rocks while trick or treating.

4) “The Nightmare Before Christmas”

A tale of a skeleton named Jack, who travels to the world of Christmas and brings Christmas spirit (and Santa) back to Halloween world. The eerie town then tries to celebrate Christmas which leads to some awful events. My Take: A fun movie that can be enjoyed by all generations. The rag doll Sally who is in love with Jack the Skeleton has some funny dismembering scenes.

3) “The Sixth Sense”

A boy who has the ability to see the dead confides in a man who has his own secrets. This involves communicating with the dead and helping them. My Take: After you see “The Sixth Sense” starring Bruce Willis you should watch it again to realize how smart the film and its makers are. Famous for the line “I see dead people”, and the twist at the end, this is a effectively creepy movie.

2) “Saw”

The first film in the gory franchise is about two men trapped by a serial killer. Meanwhile two detectives follow the killers’ recent path in order to find the new victims. My Take: The only film in the series that I personally like for its gritty, dark atmosphere and disturbing traps. Still, “Saw” will deliver chills and shrieks on Halloween night.

1) “Hocus Pocus”

A horror comedy about three witches after three teenagers who have their book of spells. Their adventure involves a dead headless man, and a man transformed into a cat. My Take: Not a Disney channel movie and not a horror film, “Hocus Pocus” seems to fit in between. The witches gave me the most laughs and a continuous joke about the dead headless man was funny as well. It seems well deserved that the most fun Halloween movie became the number one on this list. It must be magic otherwise.
